As many as 45 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from the Sona College of Technology offered their help and services to make the National polio immunization drive that was held on January 31, 2021 (Sunday) a success.
The volunteers, comprising six girls and 39 males, assembled at 7.30 a.m in Ammapet where they were briefed about their roles and responsibilities for the day.
According to NSS Head Dr. P Iyyanar, the volunteers were assigned to seven different polio drop booths set up in Ellappan School, T.V.K Ranganathar Kovil, Indira Gandhi School, Thyagi Natesan first street, Urban Primary Health Care Centre, Ammapet and Ondrapillikadu.
In the booths, some of the volunteers administered polio drops to kids while some others took up the task of visiting homes in the vicinity and getting parents to bring their children to the polio vaccination booths.
They shared awareness messages to motivate the parents.
Later, the students, along with nurses, visited homes in the vicinity. They left marks on the doors of houses to indicate whether the kids in the house were vaccinated or not.
“It was an eventful and satisfying weekend. We learnt a lot from the day-long activities,” the students said.
