The FIBRE Wearable Tech Hackathon aims to bring together students at FIBRE partner institutions to collaborate on multidisciplinary teams to address pressing challenges in healthcare and rehabilitation. This international event brings together bright minds from across multiple academic institutions, diverse disciplines, and different countries. It is a three-day virtual event for students of all disciplines. At FIBRE we embrace the idea of collaboration, and we hope that you will find inspiration, fun, and new friendships at the inaugural FIBRE Wearable Tech Hackathon. This year’s Challenge Area is pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers have a major impact on patients, their families, and the health care system. They are caused by sustained pressure and friction on the skin, which can cause pain, decreased independence, and can develop into serious infections. In this Hackathon, teams have 35 hours to develop a design concept that incorporates textiles and technology to help prevent, monitor, or treat pressure ulcers in a defined scenario. No physical prototypes are needed, but teams must be able to provide detailed technical information about their design. Teams will also develop a brand identity, and marketing plan, and record a 60- second video pitch for Judges to review as part of the judging process. All submissions must be developed during the event – no computer programming, sewing, or making of any kind must be done prior to the start of the Hackathon. From the SONA Group of Institutions, 13 teams are participating in these three days virtual events.

WHO: Students from FIBRE partner institutions can register as individuals or with a partner. The event organizers will create teams of up to 5 students to ensure that teams consist of people from different programs of study and expertise. If you sign up with a partner, you will stay with your partner on your team.

WHEN: May 13-15, 2022.

WHERE: The event will be hosted online and you can participate from home or wherever you do your best creative thinking!

WHY: At FIBRE, we believe that bringing together people from different disciplines and areas of expertise can help bring new innovations to life. This event will provide an opportunity for students from different programs of study, across different countries to learn from each other and share ideas to build new solutions to an important challenge in healthcare: pressure ulcers. It is an opportunity to think outside the box, learn about new technologies that can help you achieve your visions, connect with leaders in health, science, business, and design, and collaborate with like-minded people.

PRIZES: Winning teams will receive cash prizes:

  • First place $1000 CAD,
  • Second place $600 CAD,
  • Third place $300 CAD
