As part of its ongoing Guest Lecture Series, The Department of Civil Engineering invited noted academician and Lecturer, Dr.R.Balamurugan, Associate Professor, Institute of Road and Transport Technology, Erode. The topic of discussion was “Finite Element Application in Civil Engineering”. The guest lecture was arranged for P.G Structural Engineering students in Civil Engineering Department Library from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm on 07.04.2018. The objective of this lecture was to enhance the student’s knowledge in the field of finite element method.
Erecting structures requires a great deal of analysis and design. This is where FEM comes into picture. It is basically a way to solve the otherwise difficult and sometimes unsolvable partial differential equations that govern the behaviour of the structure. Finite Element Analysis allows you to analyse a structure and obtains required variables which might assist you as an engineer to design better and safer structures.
During the lecture, Dr.Balamurugan, delivered the concepts of finite element methods and its applications in civil engineering field and the research area. The lecture also helped the students to understand and analyzing the two dimensional and three dimensional structures using ANSYS software. Different types of elements used in analyzing the two dimensional and three dimensional structures were also discussed during the lecture
