Air Quality Monitoring Station with high tech equipment for sensing the air quality is set up at a cost of Rs.1.20 crore at Sona College of Technology, Salem. It was inaugurated through Video Conferencing by Hon’ble Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on 28.10.2020 in the august presence of Chairman Mr. C. Valliappa, Vice Chairmen Mr. Chocko Valliappa and Mr. Thyagu Valliappa, Principal Dr. S. R. R Senthilkumar, Head of Department Dr. R. Malathy, Division Environmental Engineer, and other staff members of TamilNadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).
This station was installed as a part of MoU signed between TNPCB and Sona College of Technology with a motive of monitoring the Air Quality Index in and around Salem for a radius of 20 km. Parameters such as P.M2.5, P.M10, O3, CO, SO2, NH3, NO2, Wind speed, Wind direction, Relative Humidity, etc., present in the ambient air will be measured for every 1 hour and the same is being displayed on an Electronic Board placed in the college premises for public view. The data will be sent collectively to the State Pollution Control Board and further processing will be done by Central Pollution Control Board once in a week. This data obtained from the station will be beneficial for research activities of the faculty and students of Department of Civil Engineering. Through constant monitoring of air quality, pollution can be minimized by enforcing rules and regulations by comparing the level of gases released from nearby industries.
