An exceptional model in institution building: Sona College of Technology’s silver jubilee annual day recollects the journey

From its humble beginnings with three class rooms and three courses in 1997, Sona College of Technology is now a prestigious institution offering  10 undergraduate and 11 post-graduate engineering courses, MCA, MBA and Ph.D in several disciplines. The vibrant land mark campus houses multiple buildings of modern class rooms, labs, libraries, workshops and halls.

The saga driven by the founder Shri. M.S Chockalingam’s vision and his great emphasis on broad based education is being carried forward into a new phase of rapid rise to excellence by Chairman Shri C. Valliappa.  Shri C. Chocko Valliappa and Shri. Thyagu Valliappa, Vice Chairmen give the institution its 21st century face.  The events of the silver jubilee annual day held on May 19, 2022 recollected high points and challenges in Sona’s exceptional journey of institutional building.

“The success is a continuum of Sona Group’s services since 1920s in the field of education,” said Dr. S.R.R Senthil Kumar while reading the college annual report 2021-22.

Chairman, Valliappa said the college pursued the mission of,” dream job placements” with Rs 8 lakh pay per annum.  He wanted more students must get such placements. “Add little more efforts to the initiatives of the college, to achieve the dream job, Follow your teachers’ suggestions, you will become heroes in life,” he said.

Shri Chocko Valliappa in his message lauded the students for having proved themselves. “You are really 25 carrot gold,” he said alluding to the word Sona which means gold.

Shri Thyagu Valliappa in his address said the institution was in the mission of bringing tomorrow’s technology today. Stating that students from Lkg to PG study at Sona he said, “We engineer mindsets rather than adopting the rote method”.

” What we are now is a result of hundred years of hard work and vision of our forefathers. To move forward from here requires new thinking and approach.  We aim at providing top-notch education”, he said.

Chief Guest, Suryanarayanan M.S, Associate Vice President and Development Centre Head, Infosys, Chennai and Sarbajit Ghose, Asia Executive Director CIEI, Textiles and Managing Director, Laguna Clothing, Bangalore inspired students with personal stories of professional struggles and success.

In his report on the achievements of the college on the R&D front, Dr. Chandrasekaran, Director, R&D said, Rs 5 crore research funding is in the pipeline and the target was to get 100 patents.
