KEF INFRA – INDUSTRY VISIT REPORT
The industry visit was at KEF infra a pioneer industry for infrastructural development and growth that manufactures precast. We started to the industry at 7.00am sharp from Sona college of Technology campus, followed by breakfast at 9.00am and we reached the industry at 11.00am. The industry is located at Krishnagiri that has their own state of art factory. We had a warm welcome with a small snack break followed by an overview of the company. Mr.Naveen delivered us about the safety principles followed in the industry and how the company has always been so particular about safety of employees working there. The industry has five dedicated units that includes Precast and Concrete, Prefabricated Bathrooms and Modular MEP, Joinery and Fit-out, Aluminum Glazing and Stone Processing.
After wearing the safety shoes and helmet Mr. Bruse took us to the Aluminum Glazing unit. This unit has aluminum doors and windows, structural glazing, composite panels, SS cladding and pre-engineered facades. We were exposed to the manufacturing of few ongoing products and were explained its application in current infrastructures. After a lavish lunch inside the campus mess, we were taken to the precast unit. In this unit concrete casting is done then cured in a controlled environment transported to the construction site and lifted into place.
Precast is one of the most trending topics in the fields of Civil engineering and also carries a great part in academics as well. Our faculties took great interest in this unit and came out with lots of doubts and ideas wherein we had a long discussions. Precast technology delivers highly complex structures in half the time, with no compromise in quality. Precast meets the cost benefit and timely completion of the project.
Followed by the precast unit, we were taken to the Joinery unit which was equipped to produce furniture and woodwork which manufactures domestic and office furniture’s. We also witnessed a modular construction where the a house was assembled rather than built. a simple house with a living room, kitchen come dining and two bed rooms was assembled in just 1 day and the total cost of the house is just Rs.6 Lakhs. Such latest technologies helped us to rethink our project ideas we give to final year students. Here planning, designing and fabricating of building elements happen in one place.
At last, we had the opportunity of seeing presentations on the journey this Kef Infra team and their various projects. They handle various projects in healthcare, business, IT parks, housing, education and hospitality. After a refreshing break we thanked the entire team of Kef Infra and especially Mr. Bruse who were with us all throughout the day and made sure the objective of this visit was fulfilled. KEF Infra is the largest industry with an integrated facility dedicated to offsite-construction, where buildings are manufactured in a factory environment. A day rightly fulfilled and meeting the aim of this visit, we left the industry at 3.30pm and reached college early by 6.30pm.

Salem civil engineering association (SCEA) conducted District Level Build Expo 16 during both 30th December 2016 – 2nd January 2017. The main motto of this expo is to exhibit products related to civil, electrical mechanical plumbing and to create awareness among the public about the new products developed by different companies. Students were also given the opportunity to exhibit their ideas in the form of working models/prototypes. 42 projects from 16 different colleges in and around Salem have exhibited their works. Third & final year students of civil engineering department of Sona college of technology, Salem have exhibited their project under various concepts like modernization of Salem city, kinetic foot fall, pneumatic roads, magnetic water for agricultural purpose, reused derived fuel, mass street lighting. Students from Sona College of Technology & Government college of Engineering, Salem bagged first place for modernization of Salem city with a cash prize of Rs.12000/ winning shield & certificates. Our students have also awarded with best novel idea for pneumatic road concept. Our students were also motivated by a cash prize of Rs.1000 per batch. The college was recognized by awarding the title as “Best motivating college”. Our chairman Shri.C.Vallippa congratulated the students for their efforts taken and awarded a cash prize of Rs10,000/- as the motivation to other students. Vice chairmen Principal, Head of the department/ civil also congratulated and asked the students to implement their models into real life structures.
Civil Engineering students of II and III year of Sona College of Technology has participated in National level technical symposium and won prizes in various events conducted by Mahindra group of Institution on 19th August, 2016. The third year students of civil engineering department have successfully completed their internship training program conducted in the JSS academy of technical education Bangalore by the experts hub. The students performed excellently in the allocated project and they bagged the overall trophy among the various colleges from India.
CEO of JSW Steel honoured Civil Engineering Professor of Sona College of Technology for her innovative research work on “Effective Utilisation of JSW steel slag” in making concrete blocks like paver blocks, Solid blocks, Hollow blocks, Bricks, Road separators and other precast products which are cost effective and eco-friendly. JSW Steel is of the leading steel industries which produces quality steel using Energy Optimized furnace in India. Only two industries in India are producing steel using this furnace. The slag from EOF is to be utilized effectively. Dr.R.Malathy and her team Prof.M.Arivoli and Prof.N.Savitha come out with different useful products from waste. Particularly paver concrete block replacing slag for aggregates attracted everywhere which will reduce 40 % of the material cost. Since JSW is looking for disposal of steel slag which is produced in mass everyday. They found this product will bring out better solid waste management.
